Olympiakos secured a surprise 3-2 victory over last season’s
Champions League runners-up, Atlético Madrid, in Group A at the Georgios
Karaiskakis stadium. The Greek champions went ahead after 13 minutes when slack Atlético
marking at a corner allowed the French defender Arthur Masuaku to drill
home a low shot.
Just after the half-hour Olympiakos doubled their lead through the former Barcelona forward Ibrahim Afellay. Mario Mandzukic pulled a goal back for Atlético seven minutes before
half-time but Olympiakos restored their advantage in the 73rd minute
when Kostas Mitroglou scored his first goal for 10 months.
The Atlético substitute Antoine Griezmann set up a tense finish with a
close-range goal with four minutes left but Olympiakos held on for
victory
