Messi saves Barcelona from Atletico Madrid 2-1

Barca Blaugranes

Barcelona and Atlético Madrid put together a fantastic football match that ended with a 2-1 victory for the Blaugrana in the last La Liga encounter between these two Spanish giants at the Vicente Calderón. Both teams attacked each other in a match filled with many exciting moments, and Lionel Messi scored a late winner to give the Catalans three gigantic points in the title race.
FIRST HALF
The first half hour of the initial period was fully controlled by the hosts, who pressured the ball high up the pitch, recovered it and forced Ter Stegen into a few big saves. The Blaugrana couldn't control possession in the midfield and were on the back foot for most of the half, creating some chances on the counter but not doing anything dangerous.
But as we approached the end of the half, the visitors took control of the ball, finally, and then began to scare the Colchoneros and Jan Oblak had to make two amazing stops to keep the score at zero.
At halftime, Atlético were the better side but couldn't score, and Barça showed good signs of what was to come in the final period.
SECOND HALF
Luis Suárez and Antoine Griezmann wasted chances they normally wouldn't in the first five minutes of the second half, and it was clear we'd have an action-packed period. The two teams continued to trade shots and fouls, and then the goals came.
First, a total mess in the box with players from both teams scrapping to find the ball eventually ended with Rafinha Alcântara scoring a really nice goal with his right foot. Atlético answered quickly when Diego Godín headed the ball in and tied the game with 20 minutes to go.
Both teams tried to go forward in search of the game-winner, and it was Barça that got it thanks to the world's greatest player: Lionel Messi was at the right place at the right time, and scored a clutch goal in the 86th minute. Three massive points for Barça, and Messi is Messi.

Atlético: Oblak; Vrasljko, Savic, Godín, Luis; Koke, Gabi, Saúl, Carrasco (Torres); Griezmann, Gameiro (Correa)
Goal: Godín (70')
Barcelona: Ter Stegen; Piqué, Umtiti, Mathieu (Digne); Roberto (Gomes), Busquets, Iniesta (Rakitic); Messi; Rafinha, Suárez, Neymar
Goals: Rafinha (64'), Messi (86')

Atletico Madrid 0-1 Barcelona: Treble is on for Luis Enrique in his first season after Lionel Messi's brilliance clinches La Liga title

  • Diego Simeone's side frustrated the visiting Catalans for long spells at the Vicente Calderon

  • Neymar and Lionel Messi were kept quiet as Barcelona knew they needed three points for the title

  • Diego Godin missed a superb chance with the score goalless just after half-time

  • But Messi opened the scoring on 65 minutes as Barcelona won the 23rd La Liga title in their history
What a difference a year makes. Three-hundred and sixty-five days ago, Atletico Madrid won La Liga at the Nou Camp and now Barcelona have exacted revenge, winning the Spanish title – their 23rd – by beating the former champions in the Vicente Calderon.

When the goal came, it had to be Lionel Messi, for so many reasons. Because he is the star of this team. Because finding his best form in years has inspired Barcelona to reach two cup finals and win this trophy. Because Cristiano Ronaldo had just scored a few minutes earlier against Espanyol, to jeopardise Barcelona's title chances.

It was a beautiful strike, too. Messi fed the ball into Pedro, in the left-hand side of the area. Pedro knew his job was to cut it back to the Barcelona No 10, and did just that. One touch from Messi, rolling his left foot over the ball left Jose Gimenez lunging at thin air. Another micro-touch to the left, unbalanced Diego Godin and a third and final touch saw the ball nestling in the bottom right corner of Oblak's net.

Luis Enrique is dreaming of the treble, a word he admitted in a press conference that he likes. He is dreaming of emulating Pep Guardiola's achievement in his first season at Barcelona, which would make the Catalans the only team to do it twice. This was a huge stride in the right direction, and now the coach can rest players in the final match of the league season, at home against Deportivo de la Coruna next weekend.

Last season these teams met six times and Barcelona failed to win on any occasion, only scoring three goals. There has been a sea change this term, with Luis Enrique's side racking up eight goals in four matches against the Rojiblancos.
Diego Simeone was sweating at Atletico's Ciudad Deportiva de Majadahonda training complex this week. Partly because of the intense heatwave that has swept across Spain, and partly because working out how to stop Messi, Neymar and Suarez is arguably the hardest task in football at the moment – though he was saved from having to deal with the latter, thanks to a hamstring strain.

Given that his side had the week off, Simeone forced his players to sit through numerous tactical briefings, using videos of their previous three defeats by Barcelona this season to highlight the changes they needed to make to their game-plan. They looked better defensively in this game than in their other three defeats by Barcelona this season, but as Pep Guardiola pointed out, Messi is unstoppable.

Barcelona knew that with three points, the league was theirs, but they began the game slowly, preferring to save energy and let Atletico toil. Toiling, however, is found in the Rojiblanco bloodstream and Simeone's men started to enjoy themselves. Clever work by Arda Turan on the left earned his side a corner, from which they nearly opened the scoring. In it came, from Koke, and Gimenez's flicked header towards the far corner was tipped away by Claudio Bravo, straining every sinew to reach the ball.

The Chilean was called into action again when Antoine Griezmann fired in a strike from the right, repelling the forward's effort superbly, not knowing the linesman's flag was raised.

Barcelona began to take the sting out of the game by getting the ball and keeping it to themselves, and created their first opportunity in the 11th minute. Neymar, to Andres Iniesta, to Messi, but his shot was kept out by Jan Oblak. This was the start of a long battle between the Slovene and the Argentine. Messi was denied again when his header from 12 yards was aimed too centrally to trouble the goalkeeper.

The Calderon, usually so loud, was quietened by a long period of Barcelona possession. For a moment the siren of a police car whizzing between the stadium and the Manzanarez River was audible, above the murmur of the fans.

All the better for Barcelona, who continued to move up through the gears, growing in confidence and stature.

Messi fired narrowly over the bar from the edge of the box, before creating a chance for Pedro after a wonderful change of pace in midfield. He hovered like a dragonfly, near the edge of the centre-circle, before hurtling forward, away from two defenders and dangerously near to the area. His eventual through-ball was deflected and Pedro couldn't convert it, but Barcelona were now a distinct threat to the Atletico defence.

If Atletico were a sponge, absorbing Barcelona attacks, the Catalans were determined to wring the water out, and had two penalty shouts before half-time. The first saw Juanfran handle the ball while going in for a challenge with Messi, but he had little time to react. Barcelona were enraged that it hadn't been given, Atletico would have been angrier if it had.

The other was an intriguing situation, where Dani Alves' shirt was pulled just outside the box, by Godin. The Brazilian defender went down theatrically, falling inside the area.

Referee Undiano Mallenco awarded a free kick, but also booked Alves for diving, and then Godin for complaining vehemently into his face. Tensions rose, there was some pushing and shoving, and when Messi eventually took the free kick his effort beat Oblak but flicked off the top of the crossbar.

After Messi struck, Atletico were a little subdued, despite throwing on Croatian tornado Mario Mandzukic for the ineffective Fernando Torres. Barcelona should have scored again soon afterwards, when Ivan Rakitic burst forward in his usual jet-pack fashion, feeding Messi, who in turn coaxed a ball through to Neymar, who was left with what should have been a simple finish.

You could already see the route it was going to take, steered round Oblak and into the far corner. But Neymar, perhaps feeling the pressure of the situation, decided to aim for the near post and blazed the ball over the bar. It did not matter. Neither did the fact that Pedro's effort from distance flew millimetres wide of Oblak's top-right corner. What did, was that Bravo was alert to make a smart stop from a Guilherme Siqueira drive, late on.

Atletico president Enrique Cerezo remembered that last season, Barcelona supporters applauded them off the field, despite Godin's header denying Barcelona the title. 'We have fantastic memories of winning La Liga last season at Camp Nou and the treatment we received from the fans of Barca,' said Cerezo. 'So if Barca win La Liga today, I hope we can celebrate with them.'

There was more of a mixed reception, with the bad blood that has shot up between these sides in recent meeting – red cards, Arda Turan throwing his boot at the linesman, Neymar aggravating Atletico fans with his flicks and tricks – with some choosing to applaud the new league champions, others opting to hurl abuse.

But in the end, Messi's 54th goal in 54 games this season in all competitions made the difference – not to mention his 30 assists – with Barcelona supporters now looking forward to welcoming the team home next week, with two finals to follow.

They will be spilling out of the bars and dancing around the Canaletes fountain, which is shrouded in legend, which sits at the top of Las Ramblas, as they have done since the 1930s, when the club wins a trophy. If all goes to plan, they will be doing it twice more, too.

Atlético Madrid held by Espanyol and lose Miranda to brutal challenge

http://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/mar/14/espanyol-atletico-madrid-la-liga-match-report
Atlético Madrid surrendered third place in La Liga to Valencia when they had Miranda sent off for a brutal challenge in first-half added time and were held to a 0-0 draw at mid-table Espanyol on Saturday.
Atlético had the better chances at Espanyol’s Cornella-El Prat stadium in Barcelona before Miranda was shown a straight red card when the centre-back felled Abraham with a leading arm as the pair jumped for a bouncing ball.
Fernando Torres had forced a fine save from Espanyol’s Kiko Casilla in the 11th minute and Koke fired narrowly wide a minute later.
Playing with a man fewer in the second period, the champions struggled to create scoring opportunities but Raúl García came close to breaking the deadlock 13 minutes from time when his low shot was brilliantly tipped away by Casilla.
Atlético, who are without a win in their last four games and need to overturn a 1-0 deficit when they host Bayer Leverkusen in a Champions League last-16, second-leg tie on Tuesday, have 56 points in fourth with 11 games left.
Valencia have 57 after Friday’s 2-0 success at home to Deportivo La Coruña, while fifth-placed Sevilla (49) can close to within four points of Atlético by beating Elche on Sunday.

Barcelona finally beat Atletico Madrid 3-1 as the trident scores

Lionel Messi showed why he is the boss at Barcelona making the first two goals and scoring the third in a 3-1 win over Atletico Madrid at the Nou Camp.

After a week when the Argentine had taken on coach Luis Enrique, the board had sacked the Sporting Director and called early elections the Barcelona players closed ranks around their number 10 and closed the gap on Real Madrid at the top of the table to one point.

Messi clearly used his arm to make the second goal of the night for Luis Suarez and gave away a second half penalty as Atletico Madrid clawed their way back into the game but he made sure Barça rode out the visitors’ come back by scoring the decisive third.

Barcelona’s front three clicked as early as 12 minutes when Messi and Dani Alves exchanged passes down the right with the Argentine angling his run towards goal.
His pass to Suarez cannoned off the Uruguayan and ran to Neymar who scrambled it past Miguel Moya. It wasn’t pretty but Luis Enrique will take anything at the moment and it lifted the pressure inside the Camp Nou – a Camp Nou with 70,000 more supporters inside it than for Barcelona’s midweek cup game.
That match on Thursday saw Barça demolish lowly Elche and everyone had expected this to be a much tougher test but the Atletico Madrid who were unbeaten against Barcelona in six games last season had simply not turned up.
There was none of the relentless pressing of the opposition and, with journeyman right back Jesus Gamez playing as a left-back up against Messi, Barcelona were threatening down that flank every time they attacked.

When the second goal came it came from Messi picking the ball up on the right – almost literally – he nudged it forward with his arm before racing clear and playing in Suarez who buried it for 2-0.

Simeone remonstrated with the referee Alberto Undiano, and Diego Godin and Mario Mandzukic made various gestures towards the match official suggesting he had seen the incident but not had the courage to stop play.

It had been a busy first half for the Undiano. Neymar was left with a bloodied foot after clashing with Jose Gimenez, Mandzukic elbowed Sergi Busquets and Messi caught Gamez with his forearm. Another referee might easily have shown a red card for one of the incidents.

The second half continued in the same spirit with Juanfran going through the back of Neymar and picking up a yellow card. Arda Turan should have followed him into the book for chopping down Andres Iniesta.

The referee than had the biggest call of the game as Messi tried to pinch the ball from Gamez in the Barcelona penalty area. He made contact with the full-back who exaggerating the clash throwing himself up in the air and persuading Undiano to point to the spot. Mandzukic slammed home the penalty despite the 98,000 screams inside the stadium and Atletico were back in the game.

Suarez was booked at the other end after protesting when the referee waved away appeals for a foul on Rakitic from Jimenez as the pair jumped for a cross. Mandzukic had words with Suarez no doubt trying to provoke the Uruguayan further. Tiago then went into the book for pulling back Neymar.

With 20 minutes left Simeone threw Fernando Torres into the mix. The Atletico Madrid striker came into the game with a record of five goals in six appearances on this ground. His moment of glory so nearly came with 10 minutes left when Mandzukic’ cross left him racing to the loose ball but he was beaten to it by Claduio Bravo.

Messi made no mistake two minutes from time when he was given two chances to convert Rakitic’s cross and he sent it past Moya at the second attempt. The power he has off the pitch has been up for debate all week – the in fluence he has on the pitch has never been in doubt.

Villareal stuns Atletico Madrid 1-0

Atletico Madrid were beaten at home to Villarreal on Sunday with an 85th minute strike from Luciano Vietto.

The 21-year-old striker broke past Diego Godin and placed the ball beyond Miguel Angel Moya sixminutes from time in a game that Diego Simeone's side struggled to get a grip of.

The result means the defending La Liga champions were unable to capitalise upon Barcelona's goalless draw with Getafe on Saturday.

A win would have seen Diego Simeone's side go level with Barca in second place, but the visitors produced an organised display to pull off the shock victory.

Villarreal were denied a penalty in the first half when Gabi appeared to nudge the ball out of the way of Ikechukwu Uche on the stroke of half time with his arm.

In truth Atletico had the better of the chances, but Villareal denied them too many clear-cut opportunities during a lack-lustre first half.

And the visitors began the second half spiritedly, as the lively Vietto ran at Atletico's defence on 52 minutes and shot narrowly wide from the edge of the area.

Mario Mandzukic then had a header ruled out for an innocuous challenge on defender Mario as Atletico looked to hit back at Villarreal's pressure.

But it was the visitors who stole victory when Vietto beat Godin and finished stylishly to secure the three points.

Godin secures win for Atletico Madrid over Malaga 3-1

Atlético Madrid 3-1 Málaga: Godín goal secures the three points

by Heath Chesters | Posted on Saturday, November 22nd, 2014
Atlético Madrid looked comfortable with a two-goal lead at half-time, but Málaga managed to pull a goal back and add tension to the encounter. It became an uphill struggle for the visitors, after Samu was dismissed, then Simeone’s men grabbed a third and decisive goal, before Gabi also saw red in the final moments.
Neither side could get shots through on target in the opening ten minutes, although Atlético Madrid were looking more dangerous with their crossing, keeping the Málaga full-backs busy.
In the 12th minute the home side were protesting for a penalty, after a Koke strike appeared to strike the arm of a visiting defender, but the referee was content there was no intention and awarded a corner instead. In typical fashion however and dangerous as ever from set-pieces, that brought the opening goal. Koke with the ball into the area and a perfectly timed header from Tiago, giving Kameni no chance.
The opening goal and the crowd at the Vicente Calderón urged Atlético on and for a long spell, they had complete dominance of play, forcing Málaga to defend deep in their half, although with solidity until Koke caught a quick sight of goal, but couldn’t hit the target in the 28th minute.
Unable to break through the middle, Atlético looked to width and dangerous crosses, but still Málaga held firm. When the visitors did get chances to break forward beyond the half-hour mark and with a good spell of possession, Simeone’s side were just as resolute defensively and snuffing out any danger before it got anywhere near their area.
Eventually in the 42nd minute and with a lovely move starting with a combination between Mandzukic and Arda Turan, the Turk found enough space to squeeze the ball through to the far post, where Griezmann arrived to make a simple finish. For the remaining moments of the half and comfortably two goals to the good, they simply kept hold of possession.
The referee was kept busy as play resumed in for the second half, showing four yellow cards in the space of ten minutes, with two for each side, although Málaga were showing more intensity and getting forward well. After a swift counter saw Gabi fire wide, Atlético made their first change of the game with Mandzukic replaced by Raúl Jiménez in the 57th minute and the Mexican forward almost adding the third goal five minutes later, but his header denied well by Kameni.
Málaga looked for some fresh impetus just after the hour, as Horta replaced Miguel Torres and Gracia went for a more attacking shape. That seemed to pay quick dividends, with a quick interchange of passes creating an opening for Santa Cruz to narrow the deficit.
That seemed to bring a little more tension to the game as the two sides tussled for possession, although neither were able to show any dominance for a spell, until Málaga managed to force a corner in the 73rd minute. That seemed to cause the Atlético defence initial problems, though to the relief of their outfield players, goalkeeper Moyà was alert and eventually able to snuff out the danger, ahead of any rival players arriving to take advantage. As play broke forward with the home side though and within the same minute, Raúl Jiménez was brought down from behind by Samu. With no doubts from the referee, a second yellow card was shown and Málaga were down to ten men.
Now with the game even more of an uphill struggle, Gracia made his next change in the 75th minute, sending on Recio for Darder. Atlético were looking to make the most of their numerical advantage on the pitch and in the 80th minute, a double chance almost brought the third goal. Koke with an initial free-kick that Kameni could only parry into the path of Griezmann, who snatched at his finish and fired into the side netting.
Griezmann would be the next to leave the pitch as Atlético made their second change, Saúl Ñíguez on in his place. Another set piece and just as lethally executed in the 84th minute as the home side found the decisive goal. A short corner, Koke with a cross that Kameni couldn’t clear far enough away, then Tiago with a first time ball for Godín to head in at the far post.
Final changes in the 87th minute as Málaga sent on Luis Alberto for Juanmi, whilst Raúl García replaced Arda Turan for Atlético, who left the pitch to generous applause from the Calderón crowd. Just a minute later though and the home side were also down to ten men. Gabi collecting his second yellow for a foul on Castillejo. There wasn’t enough time left for that to make any difference though. Simeone’s side claimed all three points and stopped the good run Málaga had been enjoying of late, firmly in its tracks.

Atletico Madrid wins again 4-2 versus Cordoba

Antoine Griezmann scored twice and Koke had a hand in three goals asAtletico Madrid cruised to a 4-2 win against Cordoba. Griezmann put Atletico ahead just before the break but Nabil Ghilas grabbed the first of his two goals to level things up shortly after the interval. Griezmann's second restored the home side's lead and further goals from Mario Mandzukic and Raul Garcia put the result beyond doubt before Ghilas scored his second.

Atletico started on the front foot and Arda Turan dragged a shot wide before Koke hit the bar from outside the area. Guilherme Siqueira, Gabi and Turan then all brought saves from Juan Carlos before Atletico took the lead a minute before the break as Griezmann netted his first La Liga goal.

Koke delivered a free-kick from the left touchline and Aleksandar Pantic's headed clearance only went as far as the Frenchman, who brought the ball under control brilliantly with his right foot and fired home with his left courtesy of a huge deflection. The equalizer also came from a set-piece as the visitors leveled things up in the 54th minute. Fidel whipped in a corner and Ghilas was left completely unmarked at the back post to head home.

Cordoba were level for just four minutes, though, as Griezmann scored his second. Some good work down the right resulted in Juanfran supplying a cross and Griezmann was on hand to head past Juan Carlos, who got a hand to the ball but could not keep it out.

And just four minutes later it was 3-1 with a Koke free-kick again doing the damage. The Spain international delivered from the left and when Juan Carlos came to punch and missed, Mandzukic hardly had to jump to head into the empty net.

The champions dominated proceedings for the remainder of the half and it was no surprise when the fourth goal arrived nine minutes from time. Koke was again the provider as he crossed from the left and Raul Garcia met the ball with a glancing near-post header which flashed across the face of goal and in.

Ghilas grabbed his second in the 87th minute when he capitalized on a poor clearance by Juanfran to hammer home but it proved no more than a consolation.

Mandzukic secured another win for Atletico against Getafe 1-0

Tweet By Giuseppe Labellarte, Reporter Filed: Sunday, October 26, 2014 at 21:51 UK Last Updated: Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at 13:29 UK

A solitary Mario Mandzukic goal has proved enough for Atletico Madrid to secure a 1-0 away win at Getafe in this evening's La Liga game at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, the Colchoneros moving to within two points of leaders Barcelona and Sevilla.

The game began in untidy fashion, with the first chance coming in the ninth minute when Juanfran's cross into the box was teed up by Mandzukic for Mario Suarez, but the shot flew wide of the target.

Moments later, Medhi Lacen met a loose ball on the edge of the Atletico box, but the Getafe man's effort also whistled wide of the post. Both sides continued trading half-chances throughout most of the first half, with the hosts performing admirably against the Spanish champions.

However, just when it seemed like it would be level at the break, Atletico broke the deadlock when Arda Turan's saved effort was met on the rebound by Mandzukic.

Getafe were quick out of the starting blocks in the second half, with Sergio Escudero and Angel Lafita forcing saves out of Miguel Moya in quick succession. Alexis was then sent off for the home side after clashing with Mandzukic just before the hour, which prompted a scuffle on the pitch between the players.

Lafita then came close again for the hosts in the 65th minute when his effort was palmed away by Moya, with the game becoming increasingly scrappy and foul-laden. For all of Getafe's endeavours, Diego Simeone's charges were able to repel the multitude of attacks that came their way and hold on for all three valuable points in the title race.

Atletico back to winning ways, beat Espanyol 2-0

Atletico Madrid 2-0 Espanyol: Diego Simeone's side back on track after Valencia defeat

A first half Tiago header set up Atletico Madrid's 2-0 victory over Espanyol as they seek to get back on track following a stuttering start to the La Liga season.

The Portuguese leapt well and steered a cross from Gabi into the top corner before the break and mid-way through the second half substitute Mario Suarez knocked the ball home from close range.

Antoine Griezmann could have given them a more resounding win five minutes from the end but his shot with the keeper Kiko Casilla beaten came back off the outside of the post.

Atletico moved up to fourth in the table with 17 points from eight games while Espanyol, who struggled against the home side's physical play, were down at 11th on nine points.

Diego Simeone's side have lacked the consistency, especially in defence, that won them the championship but they managed to keep a clean sheet following a 3-1 defeat away to Valencia in their last match before the international break.

'I think the team did what it had to do and was in control,' Simeone told a new conference.
'We were playing in the opposition half with Raul (Garcia) and (Mario) Mandzukic in attack finding space as did Juanfran and Arda (Turan) on the wings.

'We were patient and the goal came. In the second half we were even more dominant.'
Valencia are ahead of Atletico on goal difference and later take on Deportivo La Coruna while Sevilla, a point behind, are away at Elche.

Leaders Barcelona beat Eibar 3-0 on Saturday and Real Madrid swept aside Levante 5-0 as the pair warmed up for the El Clasico next weekend.

Valencia ambushed Atletico Madrid 3-1

Valencia stun defending La Liga champs Atletico behind first half raid

Valencia stunned Atletico Madrid with three goals in the first 13 minutes before holding on to win 3-1 Saturday and take the provisional lead of the Spanish league.
A shock own goal from Miranda put the hosts in front with just six minutes played and a well-taken goal by Andre Gomes doubled their lead a minute later, while Nicolas Otamendi's header completed the early blitz.
Mario Mandzukic hit back for Atletico and threatened to spark a revival, but hopes of staging a comeback were stopped in their tracks when Guilherme Siqueira had a penalty before the break saved by Diego Alves. Substitute Alessio Cerci thought he had scored a consolation goal for Atleti in stoppage time, but the effort was chalked off for handball and he was subsequently sent off for a second yellow card.
The result sees Valencia climb above Atletico and continue their unbeaten start to the season, whilst maintaining their habit of scoring three goals in all of their home games.
It was also their first big scalp of the season and means they can habor serious ambitions of finishing in the top four, or even challenging Spain's big three for the title.
Atletico looked to be still feeling the effects of their exhausting 1-0 win over Juventus in the Champions League in midweek and went behind through the most unlikely of sources.
Shkodran Mustafi's chipped cross was heading harmlessly straight towards the outcoming Miguel Angel Moya, but Miranda failed to communicate with his goalkeeper and reached the ball first to nod into his own net.
Atleti were rattled and soon found themselves further behind.
Gomes fought for the ball on the edge of the area and knocked it to Alcacer, who returned it to the midfielder with a clever backheel. Gomes still had a lot to do, but used his strength and skill to hold off a challenge from Miranda and drill the ball past Moya at the near post.
Valencia's thirst for Rojiblanco blood was still not sated, and Otamendi added a third goal after 13 minutes, completing a well-worked set-piece routine. The Argentine hid behind a number of team-mates in the box, before powering Pablo Piatti's corner into the net.
However, just before the half-hour mark, Atleti replied. Tiago brought the ball forward from the halfway line and beat a man before playing a one-two with Antonio Griezmann and thumping the ball at goal. Alves could only punch the ball out in front of him, where Mandzukic was waiting to knock into the empty net.
The goal propelled Atletico forward and shook Valencia. The visitors had an appeal for a penalty turned down for a possible handball by Antonio Barragan, and then Griezmann raced through the middle but was denied a shot on goal by an expert last-ditch tackle by Mustafi.
A minute before the break Atleti got the penalty that had been denied them earlier, Jose Luis Gaya penalized for cutting out a cross with his hand. But Siquiera squandered the golden opportunity after his weak daisy-cutter was easily gathered by Alves, who has now saved 13 penalties in the Primera Division.
The knowledge they had passed up the chance to cut the deficit to one goal appeared to deflate the champions, and they were toothless in the second half, finding it hard to negotiate their way past a combative Valencia side who were determined to see out the win and prove they mean business this season.
Atletico's first league loss this season left the defending champions provisionally in third.

Celta de Vigo held Atletico Madrid to a draw 2-2

Pablo Hernandez celebrates after scoring a volley

Atlético held by impressive Celta Vigo

Atletico Madrid’s stuttering start to the season continued with a 2-2 draw against a spirited and impressive Celta Vigo side at the Vicente Calderon.
Despite the derby win over Real Madrid last week Diego Simeone’s side have struggled to build momentum, demonstrated by the Champions League defeat to Olympiakos during the week.
And the Spanish league champions failed to bounce back from that result, as they came up against a Celta Vigo side that dominated large spells of the game at the Vicente Calderon.
Celta Vigo took the lead in surreal fashion, when Pablo Hernandez languidly stuck out a leg to meet a lobbed cross into the box, directing the ball into the net with the back of his heel.
However, Atletico struck back through Miranda, who flicked a Koke freekick past Sergio Alvarez in the Celta Vigo net.
And the champions claimed the lead before the break when Diego Godin powered home a header having leapt so much higher than anyone else from a corner kick.
But Celta Vigo refused to relinquish the contest and levelled the score themselves from the penalty spot, after Miranda’s reckless challenge on Carles Planas, with Nolito converting comfortably to make it 2-2.
