La Liga: Cristiano Ronaldo nets hat-trick as Real Madrid beat Sevilla 3-2

Cristiano Ronaldo hit a record-breaking 25th La Liga treble as Real Madrid won a tricky match at Sevilla 3-2 on Saturday.
Barca moved a step closer to their fifth La Liga title in seven years but Real trail them by only two points with three games left in the season.
Champions Atletico Madrid lacked creativity against Athletic Bilbao and were held to a 0-0 draw but remained in the driving seat for third place with a seven-point lead over Valencia who play Eibar on Sunday.
Suarez's prolific form has brought the Uruguayan 17 goals from his last 16 games in all competitions while Messi has 40 goals -- two less than top scorer Ronaldo.
Ronaldo now has the highest number of hat-tricks in La Liga history, one more than Messi.
He headed home an Isco cross after 36 minutes and a minute later Javier Hernandez flicked on a James Rodriguez cross to the Portuguese who beat keeper Sergio Rico from six yards.
Substitute Gareth Bale crossed for a fine header by Ronaldo from a narrow angle to complete his hat-trick after 69 minutes and condemn Sevilla to their first home defeat in 35 matches in all competitions.
Ivan Rakitic volleyed into the roof of the net to give Barca the lead after 42 minutes at Cordoba and Suarez slotted home in first-half stoppage time.
Messi headed in straight after the restart, with further headers from Suarez and Gerard Pique as Barcelona hit their stride.
Messi scored into an open net with 10 minutes to go and Neymar converted a penalty after he was brought down by defender Adrian Gunino.
Barca showed no mercy with Suarez striking again two minutes from time to seal a resounding win.
"Football is a very complex sport. We are on the right road but you have to start again before each game and look to create the play in order to get the results," Barca coach Luis Enrique told reporters.
"The goals from Ivan and Luis have got us going and then in the second half we were very effective in front of goal.
"These were three key points and I am very pleased with the result."
Real were still without Luka Modric and Karim Benzema while Bale was only fit to start the game on the bench.
Sevilla, who held Barcelona to a draw last month, started well and caused problems for the Real defence down the wings with Jose Antonio Reyes in particular a threat.
The Andalusian side though were down to 10 men when Ronaldo pounced for his first two goals as Grzegorz Krychowiak was on the sidelines after a clash of heads with Sergio Ramos.
Sevilla fought back and Carlos Bacca scored a penalty before halftime after Ramos felled Aleix Vidal.
After Ronaldo added his third Vicente Iborra scored from a Vidal cross and although Real had to resort to last-ditch defending they hung on for the victory.

Sevilla 2-2 Barcelona: Lionel Messi and Neymar strike but hosts recover to blow title race wide open

http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/match-reports/sevilla-2-2-barcelona-lionel-messi-5502866

Luis Enrique's side started with a bang at the Sanchez Pizjuan but Ever Banega and Kevin Gameiro salvaged a point in a thrilling game.

Barcelona's advantage at the top of La Liga was cut to two points as the Catalans threw away a two-goal lead against Sevilla on Saturday night.
Having seen Real Madrid see off Eibar at the Bernabeu earlier in the afternoon, Luis Enrique's side knew that a win was essential for their peace of mind ahead of the Champions League tie against Paris Saint-Germain in midweek.
And the Catalans came flying out of the traps, dominating possession early on and going ahead within the opening 15 minutes through Lionel Messi. The Argentine combined with Neymar before clipping a shot into the far corner of Sergio Rico's net.
1-0 became 2-0 soon after, Neymar bending a devilish free-kick over the wall and into the top corner of the net to end a 55-day La Liga goal drought.
The floodgates appeared to be opening but Sevilla rallied in front of their own fans and pulled one back before the interval. There appeared to be little on when Argentine midfielder Ever Banega picked the ball up 25 yards from goal, but his effort snuck past Claudio Bravo in the Barcelona goal.
A hard-fought second half ensued for the Blaugrana, with Sevilla pressing forward in search of a point. The feeling of unease seemed to get to Luis Suarez, who had a change to settle nerves but contrived to blaze over with the goal at his mercy.
There was frustration from Neymar when he was withdrawn in favour of veteran midfielder Xavi, and the groans from the away end would only grow louder as Sevilla found an equaliser.
Jose Antonio Reyes picked out a fine pass for Aleix Vidal, whose cross from the right was tucked home by Kevin Gameiro, a second-half substitute for Carlos Bacca.
Next up for Barcelona in the league are Valencia.

Barcelona trashes Sevilla 5-1 as Messi broke La Liga scoring record

The scary thing is that Lionel Messi still has years to go. At just 27 years old, he became the all-time top scorer in Spanish football history, scoring a brilliant hat-trick to cement his place in the record books above Telmo Zarra.

Messi began the game on 250 goals, one behind the former Athletic Bilbao striker. He ended it on 253, putting paid to the last few weeks of wondering just how and when he would eventually become, inarguably, the greatest goalscorer La Liga has ever known.

Of course, Messi is so much more than a goalscorer. Sevilla found that out the hard way on Saturday night, with the Argentine the heartbeat of a Barcelona side which didn’t trip up in a potentially tricky clash against Unai Emery’s high-flying Andalusians, moving back to second place, two points behind Real Madrid.

The Nou Camp chanted his name, his team-mates threw him up into the air, giving him the bumps. Messi walked towards the tunnel, clutching the match ball. Before he was allowed to leave, the Barcelona team stood by his side, watching a video of his goals and clips of his former team-mates and coaches hailing him.

Messi looked taken aback, almost sheepish as some of his greatest moments were played out to the 78,000 spectators. But he also looked happy. Despite his comments earlier this week, suggesting his future may lie elsewhere, it’s almost impossible to see him leaving his home here. The other Barcelona players gave him a guard of honour as he left the field.

By contrast, Luis Suarez is still searching for his first Barcelona goal and was denied by Sevilla goalkeeper Beto when he raced on to a clipped through ball. The striker switched positions with Messi after 15 minutes, taking the centre-forward role while the Argentine moved to the right.

Messi's position is never easy to describe, as he drifts inside when he fancies, and on one such excursion he was knocked to the ground by Ever Banega on the edge of the box. It was a cheap free-kick to give away and Messi made Sevilla pay a hefty price. He arrowed the ball into the top left corner, leaving Beto clutching at thin air.

The scoreboard lit up with a message to congratulate Messi on reaching Zarra's all-time record and the relief on the Barcelona legend's face was clear for the world to see. Relief for having matched the record, relief even for having scored for the first time in La Liga for over a month. Neither obstacle was likely to last long in the face of this footballing giant.

The last few weeks have not been a happy time for Barcelona. A couple of defeats, combined with a poor performance away at Almeria have led to a lot of questions being asked about the coach’s tactics and methods.

There were questions being asked just a minute into the second half. Vitolo got down the left and fired the ball across. Barcelona’s on loan midfielder Denis Suarez battled with Claudio Bravo for the loose ball, which cannoned off the unfortunate Jordi Alba and into the net

But before the stadium had a chance to whistle its displeasure in the usual fashion, Barcelona were back in front. Xavi curled in a free-kick from the left and Neymar rose highest to nod home his 11th league goal of the season.
While Messi is the superstar and Suarez is the star signing, Neymar’s own star has been rising higher this season. The Brazilian has become far more effective in front of goal this term, spurred on by his impressive World Cup campaign.

Gerard Pique's exile from the Barcelona side was ended by Enrique for this match. His last appearance was in the Clasico defeat at the Bernabeu, where he gave away a penalty. Whether he was missing because of some weak performances or a string of disciplinary offences has never been clarified by the Asturian coach, but regardless, the punishment now appears to be over.

Pique won't get away scot free with his role in the Sevilla goal, with both the Spaniard and Dani Alves culpable of switching off, far more to blame than the actual player who put through his own net.

Barcelona had dominated the first half, with only poor finishing and a couple of agricultural Sevilla challenges preventing them from further increasing their lead. A brilliant Beto save from Neymar on the stroke of half-time was the closest they came to doing so, while Suarez was denied after Messi had played a sublime ball to Alba, who sought out the Uruguayan.

While Suarez has had trouble finding the net, the first few weeks of his Barcelona career - after his lengthy suspension for biting ended - have been fruitful. He has created several opportunities for his team-mates, setting up both Barca goals in a man-of-the-match second half substitute appearance against Almeria. And he made another one here, eking out the perfect cross for Ivan Rakitic to head home from close range.

The Croatian diligently finished off the chance but looked mortified at having scored against his former side. He was the star performer in Sevilla’s run to the Europe League final and eventual triumph last season, although his start to life at Barcelona has been mixed.

But whatever problems there are at Barcelona will have to be analysed another day. Messi made sure of that. He surged in to meet Neymar’s cross at full-length and poke home from a yard, to become the all-time top goalscorer in La Liga history. If he hadn’t reached it, Suarez would have had an easy tap in. But Messi does reach things that he shouldn’t. No player will overtake him for many, many years. And at only 27, he’s got plenty more goals to add to his tally.

He began the task immediately. Messi’s third goal was the best of the night, a sprawling dribble, cutting from right to left, a quick-fire one two with Neymar, a light touch to take it out of his feet, and then one of those low, placed drives from distance that he makes look so fantastically easy. That's what Messi does. He makes things look fantastically easy - even the impossible.

Late Orban goal secure Valencia a draw with Sevilla 1-1

Yahoo Sports

Ten-man Valencia struck late to claim a 1-1 draw from a dramatic Liga clash with Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

Aleix Vidal's strike just before the break looked set to earn the Rojiblancos all three points points from their Primera Division opener.

However, Valencia never stopped fighting, even after the dismissal of Rodrigo midway through the second half, and were rewarded for their persistence with just over a minute of normal time remaining when Orban bundled the ball home.

The defender's effort may have been both ugly and fortuitous, with the ball having ricocheted into the Argentine's path before he chested it home, but the visitors would argue that they deserved their slice of luck.

Indeed, Valencia were desperately lucky to have not opened the scoring when Pablo Piatti was put in on goal with just nine minutes gone.

However, the midfielder's low strike cruelly struck both posts without ever going over the line, much to the relief of Beto in the Sevilla goal.

Both sides subsequently struggled to create any clear-cut openings until the hosts broke the deadlock just before the break.

Carlos Bacca eluded two players on the left-hand side before slipping the ball inside to Vidal. The midfielder's first effort struck Beto's chest, but he made no mistake with the rebound to send the Sanchez Pizjuan wild.

Bacca's pace continued to cause Valencia problems in the second half and the striker was also involved in what should have been a second goal for Sevilla in the 66th minute. However, Vitolo fired wide with the goal at his mercy.

Still, it did not seem as if Sevilla would be punished for their profligacy, as just moments later, Valencia summer signing Rodrigo was shown a straight red card for elbowing Vitolo just moments after coming on as a substitute.

Valencia kept pressing, though, and, after a well-worked corner on the left-hand side, the ball dropped for Orban, who directed it over the line with his chest to earn his side the unlikeliest of draws.

Magical Rakitic sets up Sevilla' win over giant Real Madrid 2-1

Carlos Bacca's brace gave Sevilla a sixth straight league win, while handing Real Madrid a second loss in four days.

Sevilla defeated Real Madrid on Wednesday, severely damaging Los Blancos' title aspirations, and setting a new club record with their sixth straight win in La Liga. Carlos Bacca was the hero, scoring twice, including the match winner with 17 minutes left to play.

Both sides came close to scoring goals within the first three minutes of the match. Sevilla were first when Ivan Rakitic's free kick was directed across the face of goal by Vicente Iborra, but Federico Fazio's volley attempt was struck poorly and didn't force a save from Diego López. A minute laterGareth Bale made an aggressive run but his shot from the edge of the box went well over the crossbar.
After an extended run of pressure that saw Karim Benzema come close a couple times, it wasCristiano Ronaldo who finally opened the scoring, with some help from Carlos Bacca's arm. Madrid earned a free kick 20-yards from goal and Ronaldo's shot hit off Bacca's arm as he jumped to block the attempt. The ball's abrupt change of direction left Beto frozen, as it turned right and into the net.
Sevilla answered back on a counter-attack in the 19th minute when the Madrid defense got caught forward after a set piece. Xabi Alonso's awful turnover in the midfield helped start the break as Bacca split between Dani Carvajal and Asier Illarramendi and ran onto Jose Antonio Reyes' cross inside the Madrid box. Bacca let the ball bounce once and as López went to ground, he lifted a shot over the goalkeeper to even the match at 1-1.
Ronaldo just missed his second goal of the match in the 43rd minute, beating Beto and chipping the ball over the goalkeeper. The ball hit the post and somehow managed to not cross the line before Nicolas Pareja could race in and clear it away.
The frantic end-to-end pace from the first half carried over into the second 45 minutes but as the minutes went by, Sevilla started to drop deeper and look winded as Madrid set-up camp in their attacking third.
Then in the 73rd minute, Carlos Bacca got loose again on the counter attack, receiving the ball from Rakitic -- who beat Pepe with an absurdly skillful back heel -- and racing into the Madrid box. López tried to get down and cover Bacca's shot but the ball went under his legs, bouncing off the goalkeeper's thigh and giving Sevilla a 2-1 lead.
Sevilla remains six points back of Athletic Bilbao in fourth place while Madrid drops down to third place, a full three points behind the league leaders Atlético Madrid.
Sevilla: Beto, Coke, Pareja, Fazio, Moreno, Iborra, M'bia, Reyes (Navarro 78'), Rakitic, Marin (Vitolo 71'), Bacca (Gameiro 83')
Goals: Bacca (19', 73')
Real Madrid: Diego López, Carvajal, Pepe, Varane, Marcelo, Modrić (Morata 90'), Xabi Alonso, Illarramendi (Isco 67'), Bale, Benzema, Ronaldo

Barcelona escapes from jaws of defeat with late Alexi Sanchez goal against Sevilla

Barcelona goal keeper Victor Valdes reacts after the miracle play save their day.

Dani Alves                                             36’
Ivan Rakitic                                          80’
Lionel Messi                                         75’
Coke                                                     90’
Alexi Sanchez                                       94’

For the second time, Barcelona was on the verge of losing their edge, but somehow it always manage to find a savior.

Second goal of Barcelona courtesy of Messi
Battling a 2-2 scoreline, Barcelona tries its luck to extricate itself from an undesirable situation where it had to lose 2 points in a tightly contested season.  Barely a minute before the whistle time, Barcelona regrouped and try to produce a miracle. Xavi received  throw in and found Messi on the right hand side.  Messi raced towards the right of the penalty box and then penetrates deep into the goal line.  He then lets out a pass to the middle which Sevilla goal keeper Beto deflected.  Unluckily for Sevilla, the deflection landed on Alexi Sanchez who immediately pounced the ball and sending the ball to the back of the net.  Camp Nou erupted both in jubilation and relief as their team made a miraculous resurrection from the dead.

Earlier, it was a game dominated by Barcelona as clearly it had numerous opportunities.  Neymar made several intrusions into the Sevilla backline. Each time however, Neymar is thwarted by the swarming defense. Displaying their trademark patient offense, Barcelona finally reaped the dividends in the 36th minute when Dani Alves broke the ice after chip pass from Adriano.  Alves rifled the shot which was blocked by Beto but the ball bounce towards the inside of the goal.  Barcelona could have added the goal before halftime, courtesy of Pique's header,  but it hit the woodwork.

In the second half, Sevilla showed signs of coming back with their counter attacks.  The break came in the 64th minute when Juan Cala's header found its way into the net, only to be nullified as Kevein Gameiro was found offside.  Just as Sevilla was set to equalise, Messi finally scored a goal in the 75th minute from Neymar's layback.  However, in the 80th minute, Sevilla struck back when Ivan Rakitic received a square pass from Vitolo and poked it towards the Barcelona goal out of reach of Victor Valdes.

An unmarked Coke slammed ball into the Barcelona goal
Barcelona failed to defend the lead later as a Rakitic corner found an unmarked Coke who slammed the ball into the net in the 90th minute just as the injury time started.  Frustration and shock seems to descend on Barcelona as they are on the verge on losing two points and possibly the lead in La Liga.  To make matters worse, Sevilla almost wiped out any point for Barcelona when in the 93rd minute Juan Cala pass a through ball to a streaking Marko Marin and set up a one on one with Victor Valdes.  Fortunately for Barcelona, Valdes picked the ball before Marin could do the damage.

Messi and Alexi: saviors of the day
In the ensuing play, Barcelona made a miracle this time courtesy to the indafatigable and never say die Lionel Messi.
