Ligue 1 match report: Lens beat Toulouse to boost survival hopes

Ligue 1 match report: Lens beat Toulouse to boost survival hopes

Lens gave their Ligue 1 survival hopes a much needed shot in the arm as they ended a nine-game winless run by beating fellow strugglers Toulouse at Stade de la Licorne.
Antoine Kombouare's men had lost their preceding four matches in the league, while their recent run had encompassed six defeats.
So it will be of some relief to the northern club that they claimed a battling 1-0 victory on Saturday night, with Pablo Chavarria's 76th-minute goal the difference between the two teams.
It was a win that moved them seven points adrift of safety and only four behind 18th-placed Toulouse, who have now lost three of their last four.
The home side nearly went ahead in the opening minute, with Toulouse goalkeeper Zacharie Boucher forced to keep out Jerome Lemoigne's flick on from Wylan Cyprien's corner.
At the other end Wissam Ben Yedder headed wide, while Adrien Regattin's low strike was saved by Rudy Riou after Lens had failed to clear their lines.
But Boucher had to make a superb reflex save from Pierrick Valdivia's volley at the far post from Cyprien's corner as Lens continued to threaten at set pieces.
Toulouse ended the half strongly as Oscar Trejo jinked his way into space before shooting narrowly over the bar from just outside the area.
Yoann Touzghar headed ove,r while Madagascan midfielder Lalaina Nomenjanahary's strike also missed the target as Lens begin to flex their muscles in the second half.
And they took advantage of Toulouse's frailties at corners to take the lead with just 14 minutes remaining.
Nomenjanahary's set-piece was only partially cleared to Ludovic Baal, who sent the ball in again for Chavarria to swoop in and fire a close-range strike past Boucher.
Toulouse almost levelled matters immediately afterwards, but Riou made an important block off Ben Yedder and that was as close as the visitors came, with Lens holding on for just their sixth win of the campaign.

Atlético Madrid held by Espanyol and lose Miranda to brutal challenge

http://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/mar/14/espanyol-atletico-madrid-la-liga-match-report
Atlético Madrid surrendered third place in La Liga to Valencia when they had Miranda sent off for a brutal challenge in first-half added time and were held to a 0-0 draw at mid-table Espanyol on Saturday.
Atlético had the better chances at Espanyol’s Cornella-El Prat stadium in Barcelona before Miranda was shown a straight red card when the centre-back felled Abraham with a leading arm as the pair jumped for a bouncing ball.
Fernando Torres had forced a fine save from Espanyol’s Kiko Casilla in the 11th minute and Koke fired narrowly wide a minute later.
Playing with a man fewer in the second period, the champions struggled to create scoring opportunities but Raúl García came close to breaking the deadlock 13 minutes from time when his low shot was brilliantly tipped away by Casilla.
Atlético, who are without a win in their last four games and need to overturn a 1-0 deficit when they host Bayer Leverkusen in a Champions League last-16, second-leg tie on Tuesday, have 56 points in fourth with 11 games left.
Valencia have 57 after Friday’s 2-0 success at home to Deportivo La Coruña, while fifth-placed Sevilla (49) can close to within four points of Atlético by beating Elche on Sunday.

Athletic Club beat Celta de Vigo

Celta Vigo 1-2 Athletic Bilbao: Los Leones roar back into the top 10

Athletic Club Bilbao seem to have finally found the form they’ve been missing throughout the entire season but face a Celta Vigo side who are firing at will and waiting for the goals to start pouring in again.
Celta Vigo hadn’t beaten Athletic Bilbao in Balaidos since March 2003 and the Basque side were determined to continue that streak.
Celta controlled possession through the first 15 minutes of the match but it would all quickly come falling apart as Augusto Fernandez brought down Iker Muniain in the penalty area, giving Athletic a penalty, which Aritz Aduriz converted to put his side up early.
Athletic could smell blood in the water as Aduriz went back several minutes later forcing Sergio to make a tremendous save and De Marcos forcing the issue a bit later on.
Celta’s Larrivey would try a header, but it Athletic held the momentum and scored their second goal of the evening in the 31st minute, a brilliant effort by the in-form Mikel San Jose to score Aduriz’s rebound.
Celta would attempt to recover and regain their composure, but were unable to put Athletic in danger going into the break.
Athletic came roaring out the gates to start the second half and tested Celta early, but the Galicians would soon turn the game in their favour with Larrivey scoring in the 63rd minute to get back in the game.
However, Celta were unable to overcome a motivated Athletic side and despite San Jose getting sent off with two yellow cards in the 85th minute, Ernesto Valverde’s side came away with three points and climbed back into the top half of the table for the first time this season.

Barcelona grips lead as it beat Eibar 2-0

Top spot going into the 'Clásico'

Barcelona beat Eibar 2-0 at the Ipurúa stadium thanks to a brace from Leo Messi, meaning that they head into the 'Clásico' holding the top spot. The Argentine converted a penalty in the first half and headed home his second after the interval.

Prior to entertaining Manchester City in the Champions League, and thanks to the sharpshooting Messi, Barcelona are now certain to remain at the top of the Spanish BBVA league when they go into next week's Clásico against Real Madrid. Messi converted a penalty on the half hour in the match at Eibar, and executed a perfect header in the 54th minute, and so Barcelona ran out winners by 2-0. This means that, with Real Madrid's match against Levante tomorrow night yet to come, Barcelona have a four-point lead over them at present.

The main features of the match were Barcelona's injuries, the size of the Ipurúa stadium, the heavy rain and the crowded Eibar defence. However, Luis Enrique's players possessed enough patience and put their faith in Messi to keep them at the top of the table. Barça worked hard and calmly right through the first half, yet barely had a single goalscoring chance, despite looking dangerous twice in the first minute. There was an occasional flash of brilliance from Messi, and then the penalty brought a degree of calm and Barça started the second half which was just as wet, but as coolly conducted as the first half had been.

Feeling that a second goal was necessary to secure a crucial victory, Messi took not much more than ten minutes to bring it about. He rose on the penalty spot to connect with a corner taken by Iván Rakitic, and headed a perfect goal, putting his side 2-0 up, and reassuring Barcelona that the three vital points were in the bag, guaranteeing their being at the top of the league, whatever happens in the Real Madrid-Levante game.

Valencia CF continue lethal form at Mestalla (2-0)

From: Valencia CF

March, 01 2015 - Piatti brace beats defensive Real Sociedad

Valencia CF continued their imperious form at Mestalla with a 2-0 win over Real Sociedad, thanks to a Pablo Piatti brace in the second half. The result was the team's first victory against the Basque side at home since 2011 and a further boost to their hopes of playing Champions League football next season.

The early kickoff at Mestalla began with an early chance for José Gayà, who took the ball on his less-favoured right foot and sent his shot wide. It was a sign of things to come in the first half, in which Valencia CF pushed and upped the intensity with every passing minute. Sofiane Feghouli had a good opportunity of his own for VCF, but was also off target -having not seen teammate Álvaro Negredo unmarked at the back post.

Whilst Valencia CF played an expansive, attacking game, Real Sociedad limited their strategy to defending and slowing down the pace. VCF were happy to press up on their opponents and look for the counter attack.

On 26 minutes Shkodran Mustafi headed towards goal on a move resulting from a corner, but he was denied by Real Sociedad goalkeeper Rulli's agile stop. Moments before, VCF had an appeal for a penalty waved away when Canales had appeared to stop Gayà's shot with his arm.
Mustafi would later block Xabi Prieto's powerful shot -a rare Real Sociedad chance- before the game went into the halftime break with the score at 0-0. Valencia CF had dominated play, but had received no reward for their efforts.

Manager Nuno Espírito Santo took off Nicolás Otamendi upon the start of the second half, due to an ankle issue for the Argentine, replacing him with fellow countryman Lucas Orban in the defence. Further up the pitch the side remained unchanged, and on 47 minutes they had their first shot of the half: Feghouli's hit made contact with the back of Real Sociedad's Ansotegi when it looked to be on its way in.

The deadlock was finally broken 52 minutes in, courtesy of Pablo PiattiDani Parejo made a majestic turn on Rubén Pardo, crossed into the box and found Piatti waiting to shoot. The Argentine's effort hit Ansotegi -only this time the ball went into the net. 1-0 to Valencia CF, and it was no less than they deserved.

However, the best was yet to come, and Piatti would get his second of the afternoon shortly after; Feghouli put the ball inside to him and he beat Rulli with a cool finish. It was Piatti's seventh goal in La Liga this season.

Älvaro Negredo came close to making it 3-0 with a shot into the side netting, followed by Rodrigo sending a terrific chance wide on 76 minutes. Real Sociedad had become even more vulnerable as they advanced their lines in search of goals, but VCF were not able to take full advantage.

Nevertheless, another victory in front of the home fans at Mestalla and an impressive performance keep Nuno's side in a strong position in La Liga -and serves as perfect preparation for the game at the Vicente Calderón against Atletico Madrid next weekend.

Malaga edge out Getafe in five-goal thriller

From: Sportsmole

Malaga have kept the pressure on their rivals for European qualification by recording a 3-1 La Liga victory over Getafe at La Rosaleda.
A promising start was rewarded in just the 10th minute when Roberto Rosales found the space to pick out Juanmi, who powered his header home to give the hosts the lead.
Malaga dominated for much of the first half and wasted chances to add to their advantage before the break as Jonathan Lopez kept out a curling effort from Samuel Castillejo, before Juanmi came agonisingly close to scoring his second when he slid in an attempt to meet a cross at the back post.
Getafe improved in the second half and were back on level terms when Pedro Leonsprinted into space on the wing before delivering a cross which was converted by Alvaro Vazquez from close range.
However, the hosts were back in front two minutes later thanks to a ferocious effort fromSergi Darder, who unleashed a powerful strike to find the top corner from outside the box.
It looked as though the result was beyond doubt with just over 20 minutes remaining whenRicardo Horta connected with a bicycle kick to leave Lopez helpless.
Getafe would set up a tense finish when Vazquez fired home from a corner, after being gifted room at the back post, but Malaga held on to leave the visitors just four points above the relegation zone.

Rakitic raises Barça past Granada 3-1

From: Marca English

Barcelona returned to their winning ways in la Liga with a 3-1 victory over Granada on Saturday afternoon at Los Cármenes in Granada.
Ivan Rakitic scored in the first half and Luis Suárez and Lionel Messi scored in the second to hand Barcelona all three points after having suffered defeat last week at home against Málaga.

Manager Luis Enrique made a couple changes from the team that triumphed midweek in Manchester, with Marc Bartra and Jeremy Mathieu slotting into the center-back spots, while Javier Mascherano pushed forward into midfield for the rested Sergio Busquets and Gerard Piqué missed due to suspension. Also coming back into the fold was Xavi, who was inserted for Andres Iniesta. Otherwise, it was the usual starters for Barcelona, with Claudio Bravo in goal, Dani Alves and Jordi Alba at fullback, Rakitic in the midfield and the customary attacking threesome of Suárez, Messi and Neymar.

Barcelona looked uncomfortable in the early going, which could have been the effects of their taxing match on Tuesday against the English champions. Luis Enrique’s men were unable to carve out much of a chance through the first 25 minutes with only a 23rd minute Xavi shot posing a threat to Granada goalkeeper Oier. Meanwhile, at the other end of the pitch, Granada were keeping the visitors on their toes, with several perilous counterattacks.

Yet just when it looked like it could be a long afternoon for Barcelona, they struck to open the scoring in the 25th minute. Alba played a looping ball into Suarez, who beat the offside trap, and the Uruguayan fired a cross from the left that bounced off Granada defender Cala and set up an easy shot for Rakitic, who fired into the back of the net to make it 1-0.

The lead was almost doubled on a nifty give-and-go between Messi and Rakitic in the 35th minute that ended with a Messi shot coming close, but then two minutes later Granada had a shout for a penalty in the when it looked as if Bartra had taken Lass down in the area, but no whistle sounded, much to the dismay of the home fans.

Granada continued to hunt for an equalizer, and they nearly got it in the 42nd minute when a Javi Márquez shot forced a diving save from Bravo. There was one last look at a goal in the first half, with Messi having a shot blocked from point-blank range by Oier just second before the break.

The second half started with plenty of fireworks as Bravo was once again called to make a big save, this time intervening to stop Lass from finding Jhon Córdoba in the 47th minute. But then one minute later it was suddenly 2-0 to Barcelona with Suárez finding the net for the second match in a row, as the former Liverpool man poked a shot past Oier after receiving a ball from Rakitic.

But Barcelona could not rest on the 2-0 lead, as Granada fired themselves back into the match in the 52nd minute thanks to Fran Rico’s penalty conversion, following Bartra’s foul on Lass in the area that. Just like that it was 2-1 and it had Los Cármenes roaring.

The Catalonians withstood the charge from the home team and restored their two-goal advantage in the 70th minute with a goal from Messi. It all started with a Rakitic ball that was played into an onside Suárez, and the Uruguayan rounded Oier, before cutting back across a defender and finding Messi who easily swept the ball into the open net to make it 3-1. Replays showed that Messi appeared to be offside, but the flag stayed down and the goal stood.

Messi several chances late on to make it 4-1, but he missed the target in the 81st minute off an overhead kick across from Neymar, then was denied by Oier in the 87th minute and then was unable to convert on a third just a minute later.

That would wrap things up for Luis Enrique’s team, who now head to El Madrigal to play Villarreall in their Copa del Rey second leg semifinal on Wednesday.

Barcelona finally beat Atletico Madrid 3-1 as the trident scores

Lionel Messi showed why he is the boss at Barcelona making the first two goals and scoring the third in a 3-1 win over Atletico Madrid at the Nou Camp.

After a week when the Argentine had taken on coach Luis Enrique, the board had sacked the Sporting Director and called early elections the Barcelona players closed ranks around their number 10 and closed the gap on Real Madrid at the top of the table to one point.

Messi clearly used his arm to make the second goal of the night for Luis Suarez and gave away a second half penalty as Atletico Madrid clawed their way back into the game but he made sure Barça rode out the visitors’ come back by scoring the decisive third.

Barcelona’s front three clicked as early as 12 minutes when Messi and Dani Alves exchanged passes down the right with the Argentine angling his run towards goal.
His pass to Suarez cannoned off the Uruguayan and ran to Neymar who scrambled it past Miguel Moya. It wasn’t pretty but Luis Enrique will take anything at the moment and it lifted the pressure inside the Camp Nou – a Camp Nou with 70,000 more supporters inside it than for Barcelona’s midweek cup game.
That match on Thursday saw Barça demolish lowly Elche and everyone had expected this to be a much tougher test but the Atletico Madrid who were unbeaten against Barcelona in six games last season had simply not turned up.
There was none of the relentless pressing of the opposition and, with journeyman right back Jesus Gamez playing as a left-back up against Messi, Barcelona were threatening down that flank every time they attacked.

When the second goal came it came from Messi picking the ball up on the right – almost literally – he nudged it forward with his arm before racing clear and playing in Suarez who buried it for 2-0.

Simeone remonstrated with the referee Alberto Undiano, and Diego Godin and Mario Mandzukic made various gestures towards the match official suggesting he had seen the incident but not had the courage to stop play.

It had been a busy first half for the Undiano. Neymar was left with a bloodied foot after clashing with Jose Gimenez, Mandzukic elbowed Sergi Busquets and Messi caught Gamez with his forearm. Another referee might easily have shown a red card for one of the incidents.

The second half continued in the same spirit with Juanfran going through the back of Neymar and picking up a yellow card. Arda Turan should have followed him into the book for chopping down Andres Iniesta.

The referee than had the biggest call of the game as Messi tried to pinch the ball from Gamez in the Barcelona penalty area. He made contact with the full-back who exaggerating the clash throwing himself up in the air and persuading Undiano to point to the spot. Mandzukic slammed home the penalty despite the 98,000 screams inside the stadium and Atletico were back in the game.

Suarez was booked at the other end after protesting when the referee waved away appeals for a foul on Rakitic from Jimenez as the pair jumped for a cross. Mandzukic had words with Suarez no doubt trying to provoke the Uruguayan further. Tiago then went into the book for pulling back Neymar.

With 20 minutes left Simeone threw Fernando Torres into the mix. The Atletico Madrid striker came into the game with a record of five goals in six appearances on this ground. His moment of glory so nearly came with 10 minutes left when Mandzukic’ cross left him racing to the loose ball but he was beaten to it by Claduio Bravo.

Messi made no mistake two minutes from time when he was given two chances to convert Rakitic’s cross and he sent it past Moya at the second attempt. The power he has off the pitch has been up for debate all week – the in fluence he has on the pitch has never been in doubt.

Southampton beat Manchester United 1-0

Manchester United 0-1 Southampton: Substitute Dusan Tadic hits the winner for high-flying Saints as they overtake United and move up to third in the Premier League table

This defeat will hurt Louis van Gaal. History tells us that he doesn’t like conceding ground to Ronald Koeman.

It will disturb Manchester United supporters even more, though, simply because it is indicative of changed circumstances.

During the golden years, only the really big teams came to Old Trafford with victory in mind. Now, that invitation is open to any side who have the courage and nerve to take it. Sides such as Southampton.

Koeman’s team didn’t win this match with a smash and grab. It was no backs-to-the-wall, hang-on-and-hope operation. Not a bit of it.

Southampton came to Manchester looking to outplay United, while Saints’ manager came to prove himself tactically more astute than the compatriot with whom he once worked fractiously at Ajax.

As the result suggests, both plans worked. The winning goal in the 69th minute, from Serbian substitute Dusan Tadic, surprised nobody, while United’s jumbled attacking formation failed to produce anything resembling a chance until Juan Mata missed a couple of opportunities late on.

Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster had to be vigilant but no more than that. He won’t be washing his gloves this week, so rarely did he have to use them.

An interesting fact — the one that dominated social-media chat at full-time — was that United ended the game without registering a shot on target. That put Wayne Rooney’s suggestion that United had ‘deserved to win’ into its proper context and was indicative of the home team’s impotence in the final third of the field.

Perhaps equally as pertinent, though, was that this was a game that ended with no late cavalry charge from United. Here at Old Trafford, United teams used to view the possibility of victory for their opponents as an affront to their pride, as an insult even.

Even on the days they did lose, they did so while threatening to kick the door down.

Not on Sunday, though. Van Gaal made late substitutions and changed things round a bit. He pushed Rooney up the middle and threw on Marouane Fellaini to try to unsettle Southampton physically.United still ended the game quietly, though. Beaten in every way.

Young striker James Wilson remained on the substitutes’ bench while Radamel Falcao — £280,000-a-week Radamel Falcao — watched from afar, having failed to make the squad.
It was all a little odd, but then maybe not that odd at all. For this is the type of thing that always looks as though it may happen to United these days.

The misery and defeatism of David Moyes’s time at United has disappeared but a vulnerability remains. Indeed, Van Gaal’s United have the same number of points that Moyes’s team did after the same number of games. Koeman was gracious afterwards but still struck a relevant theme when he mentioned the ‘difficulties’ of United’s three central defenders. He also stated that victory had not surprised him.
‘It is a good feeling,’ he said. ‘Certainly it’s better than how I felt when United beat us at Southampton.’

Southampton began brightly, and Steven Davis and Pelle were denied by interventions from Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw respectively. Pelle also headed wide from a corner before, with 21 minutes to go, United’s defence was breached.
It was Tadic’s vision that did the damage. He seemed to have his head down amid a sea of red after United had failed to clear a long pass to the edge of their own area. But somehow the Southampton man spotted Pelle unmarked to his right and squeezed the ball out to his team-mate.

One on one with David de Gea, Pelle should have scored, but even though his shot rebounded from the near post, Tadic was alert enough and calm enough to side-foot the ball back into the empty goal from 15 yards.

There was still time for United and Mata could — maybe should — have scored late on.

Twice Daley Blind provided the Spaniard with good chances but twice he failed to hit the target. Soon after, he missed again with a half volley.

In many ways, Mata sums up the current United. Talented but unreliable, only sporadically impressive.

Real Sociedad beat Barcelona again at Anoeta 1-0

Joy for David Moyes as Real Sociedad beat Barcelona in La Liga

Real Sociedad coach David Moyes praised his side’s determined defending after their 1-0 victory over Barcelona on Sunday.
Moyes has had little to cheer about over the last year but was all smiles after his side held on to beat Barca after taking the lead in the second minute through an own-goal by Jordi Alba.
The Scotsman lasted less than a season at the helm of Manchester United before being sacked last April and took on a tough task when he agreed to take over a Sociedad side fighting relegation in November.
There were plenty of doubts in the local media over his lack of experience of Spanish football, and his inability to speak the language, but he has made a solid start, building from the back and they have lost only one game so far.
“I am very happy to get the result, it was a very important and it was a very hard game,” Moyes told a news conference. “We worked hard defensively and defending is a big part of football. You don’t win games if you don’t defend well. The way that we played at the back gave us the chance to win this game.
“I always hope that we have the ball in all our matches but against Barcelona you know that this is difficult. This is something that we can improve on but I would like to emphasise the spirit of the team and the way we worked hard together.”
Sociedad’s task was arguably made easier with both Lionel Messi and Neymar left on the bench in the first half having only returned last Friday from their Christmas break and Moyes said he was not surprised by Barca coach Luis Enrique’s team selection.
“I wouldn’t say that it was more straightforward as Barcelona have a strong squad with great players,” he said. “They have top players though and they can’t always be at their best in all games.
“The most important games for Barcelona will come later in the season and I think Luis Enrique made a sensible decision. I thought something like this would happen and we were prepared for it.”
